Why your app's rank changes so much

Updated 2026-10-19

A short burst of activity can move an app around 100 places overnight, and each country's chart only compares you with apps in that country. Apple and Google don't publish the formula; developers generally observe that the last few days weigh most.

How much do ranks really move in a day?

More than most developers expect. From chart data on October 19, 2026 (12:45 UTC), compared with 24 hours earlier:

So on the same day, one chart replaced almost a third of its top 100 and another kept exactly the same apps. Both big jumps started deep in the chart, past #100. You can follow the current movement on South Korea iPhone Top Paid, Japan iPhone Top Free and US iPhone Top Free.

Why does my rank move when nothing changed in my app?

Because a rank is relative. Apple and Google don't publish how charts are calculated, but developers generally observe that recent downloads (for Top Free and Top Paid) and recent revenue (for Top Grossing) matter most, weighted toward the last few days.

If that holds, two things follow. Your rank can fall because other apps had a better day, not because you had a worse one. And a strong day only helps for a while, because older days count for less as new ones come in.

Why is my rank different in every country?

Each store keeps a separate chart for each of its 175 storefronts, plus separate charts per category and chart type. Your rank in Japan only compares you with what's happening in Japan. On October 19, 2026, the #1 free iPhone app was Muse from Meta in the US, setlog in Japan and Hana Bank's app in South Korea. Different countries, different competition, different results.

Why did my app move on one chart but not another?

Free, paid and grossing charts rank different things. If downloads drive Top Free and revenue drives Top Grossing, a campaign that brings installs can lift your Free rank without touching Grossing, and an app with steady paying users can hold a Grossing spot while its Free rank drifts. On Google Play in Japan on October 19, 2026, ChatGPT was #4 in Top Free and #2 in Top Grossing at the same moment.

Device matters on the App Store too. iPhone, iPad and Mac charts are separate, so a move on iPhone says nothing about the Mac.

Does a big jump mean a lot of downloads?

Not in a way you can calculate. A rank is a position, not a download count, and neither store publishes a conversion. A rank only says where you sit in one chart. Treat a jump as a signal to look for the cause: a feature, press, a campaign, a seasonal moment, or a competitor dropping back.

How should I read daily rank changes?

Rankr (iOS and Android) keeps that view for your own apps across the App Store and Google Play in 175 countries, and alerts you when an app reaches a new best rank or enters a new country.

Questions

Why did my app drop in the charts overnight?

Charts are relative and, as developers generally observe, weighted toward the last few days. Other apps gaining ground can push you down even if your own numbers held steady.

Is it normal for an app to jump about 100 places in a day?

Big daily moves do happen. On October 19, 2026, 家族アルバム みてね moved from #195 to #77 in Japan's iPhone Top Free chart in 24 hours, and 건강보험25시 moved from #134 to #37 in South Korea.

Why is my app ranked in one country but not another?

Each of the 175 storefronts has its own chart with its own competition. Ranking in one country says nothing about the next.

Does a higher rank mean more downloads?

Within the same chart and country, a higher position generally means more recent activity than the apps below it. But a rank isn't a download count, and Apple and Google don't publish a conversion.
